Holt rounded the grounds of Honeysuckle Cove Inn toward the rear of the house. He had an appointment with Maggie to finalize details for the auction. Now that the event loomed only a week away, he carried mixed feelings about the whole thing.
He was destined to share a meal and an evening of entertainment with the highest bidder—someone he knew was not going to be Jaylie. It shouldn’t have mattered. It was only a single meal, perhaps a little dancing or a movie, and all in fun. Yet the thought rattled him. He wanted dinner—and all the rest of it—with Jaylie and only Jaylie.
He’d tried for the past week to break through the wall that hid her heart from him, heading over to the house after work every day to check on things. Nan was mending nicely, a spitfire septuagenarian despite her bruises and the stitches that tugged and irritated as they knit her skin back together. She was always happy to see him. But Jaylie had built an emotional wall of protection solid and strong, like a fortress, and if there was a way to breech it, he had yet to discover the secret.
Even Zeke couldn’t help with this one, though the beloved dog had tried. Every afternoon he sneaked to Holt’s house to wait for him to drive up from work in the police cruiser. It was as if he knew Holt would hang out for a while and then walk him back to Jaylie. And Holt did just that. Yet Jaylie remained aloof. For a former news anchor who had never seemed short on words, she sure didn’t have much to say to him.
He paused as he reached the edge of the garden to gaze out along Wanderlust Lake. Sunlight splashed over the water, turning the surface to winking diamonds. It brought back thoughts of another, long-ago time that caused his heart to hurt.
He grimaced. He should have gone directly inside the inn to meet with Maggie, instead of meandering back this way. The water’s edge held too many memories…and one huge regret.
He wondered if Jaylie remembered the last time they stood here together along the moonlit shore.
He sure did.
They’d shared a kiss. Not just any kiss, but one for the ages. Jaylie’s touch had incited an unexpected onslaught of emotions. All the feelings he’d harbored for her were woven into that single moment.
Their only kiss, but it was enough to illuminate a truth as real as the air he breathed.
He was in love with Jaylie. He’d been in love with her what seemed forever…since the very first day he saw her. Love at first sight. It was real. He was living it.
The realization—putting words to the emotion—had frightened the socks right off of him. He had plans, Jaylie did too. They were young, too young. And the wounds from his parents’ death were just beginning the long road to healing.
Almost all of the wounds. But one split wide open again with that kiss—the wound that said whoever he loved would eventually leave him.
